D.J. shrugged. "I read them some books, told them some stories, and the next thing I knew they were out. I guess I'm more boring than I thought."
"Must be." Cindy returned her gaze to Chris, smiling at the child in his arms. "Don't you look fatherly." She glanced back at D.J. "Christian just loves kids. Can't you tell? If he could find a woman as good with them as he is, I'm sure he'd settle down and have half a dozen."
Chris gave an inward sigh. Cindy never changed, always angling for a marriage proposal when he'd never even asked her for a date. Though he admired her dedication to her joband couldn't help but admire her beautywhen he looked at Cindy there was nothing else. No spark, no desire, no slow spread of warmth through his stomach to tell him she was the one. Chris's father had told him how love should be, what falling in love had been like for him and Chris's mom. Chris would wait as long as it took to find his one special woman.
He looked up. His eyes met D.J.'s and held. What he felt for her was going to be a problema threat to everything he'd always believed would one day be his. D.J. Halloran couldn't be the woman for him. She lived on the edge of violence. Her life hung in the balance every time she went to work. He could never spend a lifetime loving a woman who's existence could be snuffed out on the whim of a moment. He'd lost the two most important people in his life to such a whim, and he couldn't endure such devastation again. He couldn't live with the threat. God couldn't be so cruel as to expect such a sacrifice from him.
